One Disease at a Time is a non-profit organisation that has a simple but groundbreaking vision: to systematically target and eliminate one disease at a time.
Our first initiative is to eliminate crusted scabies and scabies as public health issues in Indigenous Australia. Scabies is a highly contagious skin disease, which is endemic in many remote Aboriginal communities. Crusted (hyperkeratotic) scabies, is a hyper-infective form of the disease which continues to have devastating health and social consequences for individuals and their families in the Top End. One Disease at a Time is partnering with Miwatj Health and NT Dept. of Health on the East Arnhem Scabies Control Program, an innovative program that aims to demonstrate a best-practice model of partnering with Indigenous communities to achieve a sustained reduction in the burden of disease associated with scabies and Crusted Scabies.

About the Public Health Director
Reporting to our CEO, this senior management position will see you hands on in driving the continued success of our program work in East Arnhem focusing on both scabies and crusted scabies. You will also oversee the expansion of operations to other Indigenous regions across the country utilising a novel health franchise approach founded on long lasting partnerships with communities. Specific aspects of the role include high level representative duties involving establishing long term relationships with community members and leaders whilst managing complex projects across a large geographic area.
As Public Health Director you will oversee our operational activities which are arranged under five strategic themes: (1) treat core transmitters; (2) sustained reduction of reproductive rate; (3) point-in-time prevalence reduction; (4) strengthening operational enablers and enhancers; and (5) scaling-up impact.

The Position Duties
Combining leadership, compassion and sheer determination, you will work within a supportive and highly dedicated team to provide assistance to remote Indigenous communities through the following
 key responsibilities -

• Development of strategic direction on overall program design and  implementation to ensure the program’s continued success.
• Lead project start-up phase work for new healthy skin programs including  development of clinical and stakeholder strategy, recruitment and mentoring of  key team members.
• Provide expert clinical diagnosis for suspected Crusted Scabies cases,  and conduct skin checks for high-risk patients when in community
• Day-to-day problem solving to support the field team on all program  components
• Develop and rework healthy skin franchise tools, including Operations   Manual, Workplan, People Plan,    plan, and health literacy tools for community members and clinical staff
• Lead efforts to scale-up impact of program by catalysing wider systems and  structural changes that improve the way in which existing health services  manage scabies and crusted scabies.
• Documentation of program successes and stories (medical publications,  case-studies, interviews), and contribute to wider advocacy and external  communications activities.
• Provide medical guidance and advice on use of Ivermectin in the field,  and future development of an Ivermectin protocol for mass drug  administration programs.

Key Selection Criteria
Suitable candidates with the following skills and experience are encouraged to apply -

• Registered medical practitioner (desirable)  
• A passion for Indigenous health.     
• Ability to travel regularly and spend extended periods in remote  locations.
• Previous senior management experience with the proven ability to build and  mentor highly efficient committed teams.
• Demonstrated resilience, perseverance and ingenuity in the face of  apparently overwhelming  challenges.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Community engagement experience, particularly in an Indigenous context.
• Ability to manage multiple complex tasks simultaneously where flexibility  and adaptability to changing circumstances on the ground are often required.
• Professionals with previous experience living and/or working in remote  Indigenous communities and managing complex public health programs would be  highly desired.
